Current Developments
Personal Property Tax (PPT)
Update 11/16/2011 - The Governor’s plan to eliminate or phase out the personal property tax (PPT) is expected to be released in a few weeks. Elimination of the PPT is estimated to result in a $1.2 billion cut to libraries, schools, community colleges and more. This issue is likely to roll into next year but it is important to gear up and take action now, prior to committee hearings in Lansing. We urge our patrons to contact their local legislators to ensure adequate funding to public libraries.

Sample Letter to Replace Funds if PPT is Eliminated:
As a patron of the Salem-South Lyon District Library, I urge you to oppose any effort by the Michigan Legislature to repeal the personal property tax that fails to include full replacement of the funds.
My library, the Salem-South Lyon District Library, stands to lose nearly $100,000, that’s 10% of the operating budget, if personal property tax is cut.
The personal property tax is one of the single most important and stable sources of funds for libraries and other local governments in Michigan. If the Legislature chooses to repeal the personal property tax, I urge that it be fully — not partially — replaced by a stable source of funds for local governments that are constitutionally guaranteed for essential local government services only, similar to funds generated by the personal property tax.
We need and depend on our library. It is a place of possibilities and a critical asset – for individuals (to find jobs, reeducate themselves and enhance literacy) and for the community (access to technology, continued education and economic benefits).
Please hear my voice.
